While a larger rod may be easier to cast, those little arms are going to grow tired quickly when trying to balance that longer pole.

Where to go - Especially for younger fishermen, a creek, river or lake bank is fine. It's less restrictive than a boat and there's more opportunity to explore and play if fishing becomes tiresome. Keep time restraints in mind. If you have a very limited amount of time, keep it as close to home as possible.

What to take - Safety should be a priority. If you have youngsters or non-swimmers, take along lifejackets, even if you're only going to fish from a shoreline. Make sure they're worn when it's appropriate. Don't forget to take along something to drink and a snack if you're planning to stay more than a hour or two.

What to fish with - The younger the fishermen, the more you need age appropriate gear. Bobbers are a good idea in some cases. It's a way for you to help them tell if they're getting a bite without constantly holding their fishing rods, and it's a sure sign for them as well.

Remember that you might be ready to sit in a boat all afternoon and never catch a single fish, but your little fisherman may not get that same joy. What to fish with - There's absolutely nothing wrong with fishing with worms, and this may be the best solution for a fishing trip with a youngster. Worms tend to resist being torn from the hook with a single strike, meaning the kids have more chances to catch the fish that's biting.

Dressing properly for your halibut fishing trip can make the difference between a good time

unpredictable. There are two certain precautions that one can take to make sure he or she isn't caught off guard.

First, always dress in layers. Even in the peak of summer the mornings can be darn right cool, sometimes even cold. Your base layer should always be a quick wicking synthetic. I always advise against cotton fabrics. Cotton isn't near as breathable nor has the wicking power of the synthetic garments. Cotton, when wet takes forever to dry and can leave the fisherman uncomfortable for the extent of the halibut fishing trip.
So stick with synthetic base layers. After the base layer you may add as many long sleeve shirts as the weather report calls for. The beautiful thing about dressing in layers is that you can shed off layers anytime you wish and put layers back on when you are feeling chilly. There are many great types of light-weight fleeces being made today. The best type of fleece you can have on is one that is light-weight and that can stop the wind. When you are heading out to the halibut fishing spots you might be on the back deck of the boat, usuallly in the morning. The back deck can be quite cool and the wind can chill the bone. A good fleece will stop the wind and make you feel nice and cozy. In addition to the layers, a medium to light-weight coat should be brought along. You'll sure wish you brought one on a cold Alaskan morning.
Wearing the proper pair of pants can also be critical for comfortable. I highly advise against the wearing of jeans. Cotton jeans when wet are miserable and won't dry for the entire time of your halibut charter. Again, try and wear a synthetic blend pair of pants. As for footwear, I recommend a light-weight wool sock and a waterproof boot of some kind.

Finally, one of the most important precautions to take on any Alaska fishing trip is to bring along the best rain gear that you can afford. Both the pants and the jacket are a must due to the unpredictable weather in Alaska. It can look beautiful out in the morning and by mid-day it's pouring rain and the temperature could drop ten degrees or more. Always bring rain gear, if you don't bring anything else.

Always dress in layers and always bring rain gear.
Those two precautions will ensure you being comfortable on your halibut fishing charter, leaving you to fully concentrate on catching those huge halibuts.

Planning a family fishing trip vacation doesn?t have to be fraught with a lot of stress. We all know how much time and effort goes into planning any kind of trip that includes the whole family. Be sure to ask what kind of rates, lodging and meals can be provided for your size of family.



When choosing a fishing vacation, no matter where it is, ask about the owner?s feelings about children. Most are in the business of providing the ultimate fishing vacations and love children of all ages. If your child or your spouse has never been fishing, a package with an experienced owner/guide will make it a more memorable experience. A guide will also know the ?fishing holes?. The chance that your first family fishing vacation will be successful (catching lots of fish) is almost a certainty. Your package and guide will be able to get you to the right fishing spots at the best times. Most important, check the owner and his or her business reputation. Call them and ask all the questions you want answered. You will learn a lot from one phone call. Every fishing trip I have been on has always been fun and exciting because I purchased a package, researched the business owner and made sure I understood all the details in the package. Your family will have a wonderful memory and that?s what having a family is all about.
