Spinner type lures have a shaft, split rings, a hook, a blade, a clevis, and a weight. They work in both clear and dirty water. The flash from the blade is the most attractive part, and indeed will make many fish from bluegills to muskies hit this lure.

There are four different kinds of spinner type lures: standard spinners, weight forward spinners, spinner baits, and buzz baits.

A standard spinner will catch almost all types of game fish and ranges in size from one inch to about eight inches. This type of spinner usually consists of a wait on the head of the lure and commonly consists of a single treble hook. Some may consist of a single hook, mainly because of fish snagging problems in salmon and trout tributaries. These spinners are usually reeled in a straight line, but can be "pumped" to put a more appealing action to the lure for finickier fish.

A weight forward spinner is mostly for trolling or drifting for small mouths, walleyes, and pike. They have a head at the front of the bait, which usually is lead. There are a couple of beads then a spinner, usually connected by a clevis. Last but not least, the hook, which is usually baited for more attraction and sent. This spinner "rig up" is on a straight shaft.

A spinner bait, which is used for bass, pike, and muskies, has a bent shaft and one to four blades. This spinner can have from one blade to four blades. There is usually a lead head at the "bottom" of the lure and a skirt around the hook, which is usually a large, single hook. There several ways to retrieve this lure: straight, pumping, helicoptering, or a combination.

A buzz bait looks a lot like a spinner bait, but it is reeled on the surface while the blade spins and makes noise and commotion on the top of the water. The blades look different, being bent at the tips in order to make more commotion. It catches the same species as a spinner bait will. Straight forward retrieving is the most commonly used, but pumping or ripping can be very affective.

Great Striped Bass Fishing Practices

The striped bassfish can be very elusive at times for any number of reasons. But having said that, catching this predator is not that difficult if you are prepared.
And striped bass fishing is no different then anything else, there is no free lunch ? you?ll need to practice and be prepared to bring home a boatload of the Striper.

Prepare & Practice

Before you attempt to practice you should make sure your spool contains enough line. The line should fill up to the bottom of the chamber on the top edge of the spool. A full spool does not have to revolve so quickly as the line peels off on the cast. If the spool is only half full you are going to need more force to overcome greater rotational inertia in getting the spool going. This is sure to result in problems.
You should treat yourself to a set of casting plugs. They are not expensive and will make practice in the back yard that much more enjoyable.

Choose the biggest plug, as this is the best to get the feel with when you are first starting out.

You should sit down, holding the rod and reel in the correct position, and with the rod point in the air. You then allow the plug to drop to the floor, feathering the line as it drops, but only stopping the spool as the plug reaches the floor.
By continually doing this exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes, you teach your thumb the process of controlling the spool.

As the line drops to the floor you should be able to feel the rotating spool, tickling your thumb as it spins. Your 20 minutes practice teaches your thumb to feather the line on the way out to the target, to stop the lure or bait when it reaches its target, and not to point North.
Twenty minutes is not much when you consider the practice required for the golf swing! If you're prepared to do this the advice is well worth heeding.

Having driven the family mad with your 20 minute feathering exercise, you should then be ready to take on the dog in the back yard.

Once outside, flex the rod back and forth whilst holding the spool with your thumb. This is not a 20 minute exercise - just flex the rod back and forth to get the feel of the rod loading and unloading. It is a continuous backwards and forward motion taking the rod well back, but don't stop the rod in the back position

Practice at home

You will by now have conditioned you thumb, brain and arm to all the essential things they're required to know, do and feel, during the cast. For your first few casts you should aim to lob your plug to a given target. Make sure your reel is tilted to the side, your grip is relaxed, and your elbow is by your side. There is no need to bring your upper arm into the action during the cast.
Your first casts should be gentle and high looping. Keep the movement fluid and gentle. Glance at the target you wish to cast to, but watch the plug as it glides through the air. As it travels you should be feathering the line with your thumb, ever so gently. As it reaches the target zone, your thumb should stop the spool.

That 20 to 30 minutes practice in the lounge will make the whole deal so easy. In a matter of a few casts you will find your confidence soaring. Once that feeling is achieved a whole new world of fishing pleasure will open its door to you.
Not surprising to find kids learn this technique quickly and very soon are able to land the lure in a bucket at thirty paces.

Although these reels are called baitcasters, they are best suited to lure casting. Sure you can cast bait with them too, but they are the only way to go when tossing lures for species from trout and largemouth bass to striped bass.
When you're using artificial lures, the baitcaster is the best because it's extremely accurate, is a one-handed operation, and doesn't twist the line. The baitcaster is also excellent when fishing for bigger fish of any species on light line. Once you start using them you will be hooked better than the fish you are chasing.

There are some terrific baitcasting rods and reels out there waiting for you to discover them. Today's units are light and extremely comfortable to use, making three to four hour's casting easy, provided you take the time to buy right.There are many good baitcasters out on the market and most are very well designed. When buying a baitcaster, mount the reel on a rod and get the feel of it. If the release lever forces your thumb out wide, or if the thing feels uncomfortable, try another.

For really light lures and loads you may find a threadline reel easier to get distance with, but it will not be as much fun, and you may sacrifice a little accuracy.

The most popular bait for any type of fish, has to be the worm. Honestly, what's the first thing that comes to your mind, when someone mentions fishing or fishing bait? That's right, the good old worm. Whether you use worms or not, worms are the first thing that pops into your mind. Not only that, but when you were a kid, worms are more than likely what you used for bait. Even if you have since become a flea flicker, when you were a kid, worms were more than likely employed as bait. The interesting thing is that many anglers either stop using worms all together or continue to use worms as bait, but just like they did when they were a child.

My mentor used to call it "using a worm ball". You know what I'm talking about, right? Using a fairly large hook, say a size 4 hook, and threading a worm onto the hook. Or simply hooking the worm over and over again, thus creating a worm ball. This is how we all did it as a child fishing for sunfish at the local pond, but were adults now. My mentor began tying and using gang hooks for his worm fishing.

What's a gang hook? A gang hook, or actually a 'set' of gang hooks, is simply two small hooks tied in tandem. He used to use size 10 hooks, which is what I prefer, but up to size 6 is tolerable. For those of you who don't know, a size 10 hook is pretty freakin' small! But, as flea flickers have demonstrated for years, big fish can be caught using small hooks. A set of gang hooks is by far the most natural way to present a worm. Gang hooks literally make worm fishing into a viable way for adults to fish a worm. Worm fishing with gang hooks becomes every bit as 'technical' a type of fishing as flea flicking is made out to be.

So where do you get these gang hooks? Simple. You can tie them yourself or you can go somewhere like JRWfishing and buy them. The choice is yours. If you want to tie them yourself, it's fairly easy to learn, just do a little knot research and you'll be on your way.

The bottom line is that gang hooks are the only way to fish a live worm. Using a set of gang hooks the worm appears as natural as if you just throw it in the water. Especially with size 10 gang hooks, the hooks are all but invisible! What do you think this does for the amount of bites you get? And what's great is that you'll get more bites from the larger, more wary fish. As we all know small fish have no problem biting a "worm ball". They don't know anything about being caught. It's the larger, more seasoned and wary fish that we're really interested in, right? I know I am. Gang hooks will help you catch more and larger fish, especially when fishing a live worm.

Deep Sea Fishing For Hake In Maine

Hake come in a variety of forms, including red, white, silver and long fin, and many of these species can be found off the coast of Maine. Certain species are stocked, including the red hake, which is found most commonly in the Georges Bank and Gulf of Maine regions. Though a close relative of cod and haddock, the hake bears little physical resemblance and is not considered to be as good a table fish by anglers. Hake is fairly common off the coast of Maine, and as a result is a frequent target for many chartered trips. Though not renowned for being a particularly good fighting fish, the hake is a strong, fast swimmer that offers a modest challenge.

One of the most common forms found is the silver hake, which can be found in relative abundance off the coast of Maine. Silver hake are long, slender fish which can be identified by their grey-brown coloring on top fading to silver on its sides and belly. Their mouths are large and lined with two rows of sharp teeth whilst their bodies sport two distinct dorsal fins and an elongated anal fin. Most hake species are similar in appearance, though there are subtle differences. White hake have a single chin bar bell whereas silver hake do not, and the upper jaw bone on the white hake reaches further back than it does on the red hake. These differences can be difficult to spot, particularly on juvenile fish. Average size and weight depends on the species, though silver hake are commonly around fourteen inches in length and weigh around three pounds, whereas white hake are much larger and have been known to reach several feet in length and tip the scales at nearer forty pounds.

Hake tend to feed on small fish such as herring, mackerel and menhaden, so using cut or even live bait is preferred by anglers. They can also be caught using a variety of other baits or artificial lures depending on local food sources. A medium to heavy rod coupled with a conventional reel and fifty pound test line is suitable for hake fishing. A lighter line can be used to increase the challenge, though there is always a danger of hooking a larger fish such as a cod or haddock.

Hake are most commonly found on the seabed near disturbances in waters around three hundred feet deep. In summer they are known to migrate to shallower waters nearer the coast in search of food. In terms of location, the best spots to land hake are in the Georges Bank or western Gulf of Maine region, both of which are popular chartered trip destinations.

Hake?s relative abundance and ease of catch coupled with its good quality meat ensure that it remains a target for chartered vessels up and down the coast of Maine, and whilst not as glamorous a catch as cod or haddock, do provide a modest challenge for anglers, particularly the young or inexperienced.

activities. Especially if you're heading up through the woods. It's not all about nature hikes and rock climbing.

The entire time I grew up in the rural area of Iowa, my father was an officer of hunting and fishing<a>. A game warden for short. Now, I know what you're thinking. Iowa has no rural area in particular;

the entire state is rural. In fact, it's one gargantuan corn field. This is what a buddy of mine thought anyway. Once I moved

to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, folks thought I was from the back woods. My buddy actually asked me if we were the only house

in Iowa. Wow, are people ever naive! Iowa is a state; not a corn field. Anyway, I certainly received my dose of hunting and

fishing while living in the heartland. Anything from deer hunting with a shotgun, to bass fishing on the Mississippi, to

turkey hunting with a long bow. I was able to experience a range of hunting and fishing activities. However, I did grow tired

of the hunting part. These days I no longer care to sit quietly in a tree stand and wait for a massive buck to stroll past.

Fishing on the other hand is still outstanding. I think it's the fresh trout that I love so much.

Definitely take the time to learn all about camping, hunting and fishing before tackling them on your own. Find out what

supplies are imperative and what seasons will work best. And always remember that with hunting and fishing comes

responsibilities. You can't simply run out in the woods and start gunning down deer like it's no big thing. There are rules

to this sport. Follow them respectfully and you'll have a great time.
