Are You Using The Right Fly Fishing Line?

Your fishing equipment is critical to helping you land that trophy fish and when it comes to fly fishing your line is one of the most important parts of your tackle. Having the right line for the fishing conditions will help you cast accurately and reel in that big one.

Many fishermen use colored line which is easier to see in the water. But if it is easier for you to see, does that mean it is also easier for the fish to see? Probably not. Most likely the fish will only see your leader as well as the fly so don't worry too much about the line color.

One big decision when it comes to fly fishing line is whether you want to use floating or sinking line. This really depends on the type of fishing you are considering. If you want
Your flies to stay on top of the water then a floating line is probably best as it will allow your dry flies to float and will be easier to cast. Floating line is a bit more versatile than sinking line, but if you want to do deep water fishing, you might want to consider sinking lines although they will be harder to recast once the line is in the water.

The shape of the line is also another consideration when choosing your fly fishing line. Fishing conditions will generally be the deciding factor here. Double taper lines are a certain diameter on each end but are wider in the center. They are the simplest to use if you are roll casting. Weight forward lines have more weight at the lead end. They can be harder to cast but are better to use if it is windy.

One thing that may seem obvious when buying fly fishing line is to consider the rod makers recommendations. Any given rod is most compatible with a certain weight of fishing line. Now, you can use any weight you want, but it is at your own risk. Generally speaking, you are better off going with what the rod manufacturer has designed the rod for.

The weight of your line is dictated by the waters you will be fishing and fish you plan to catch. A 3 to 5 weight line is good for small streams where you might catch smaller trout and panfish. A medium weight of 5 to 7 works good for trout and bass in medium rivers. If you are fishing for big trout, salmon or bass or are fishing in big rivers or even light salt water you might go with a 7 to 9 weight line. A 12 weight line is recommended when you are really going for that big catch.

You should also consider buying fly line backing. There are two reasons for this. The first is it will fill up your fly reel before you get to the actual fly line. This way it won't take so long to reel in your line. Also, it will allow the fish to run out farther than the line itself. It's not a big deal for fishing for small trout in streams, but you might want it if you're going after much bigger fish like tarpon.

Taking care of your fishing line will help it last longer and work better. Most importantly you should take care to keep your line clean. Fly lines will pick up dirt and film from the water - so be sure to clean them before putting them away.

Make Your Own Fishing Decor from Fishing Gear

Decorating with old, used fishing gear is fun, creative and inexpensive. It's pretty easy to find unique fishing gear to use as decorating items for your log cabin or home. Here are a few fun ideas for your fishing decor projects.

Decorating with old, used fishing gear is fun, creative and inexpensive. It's pretty easy to find unique fishing gear to use as decorating items for your log cabin or home. Here are a few fun ideas for your fishing decor projects.

First you will need fishing gear. My husband is not the fisherman in our family, I am. So it's easy for me to save old fishing lures that the hooks have dulled and gives me a great excuse to buy more too! Bobbers have a tendency to stop floating after a few whacks on the rocks along the shoreline, rendering them useless to the fisherman but a great find for the decorator. If you confiscate gear from hubby's tackle box remember you now know what to get him for the next holiday or special occasion!

Yard sales and estate sales are great for purchasing inexpensive, used fishing equipment for your decorating projects. Yard sales are less risky than hubby's tackle box too. Keep an eye out for used fishing nets, poles, lures, bobbers, metal stringers and other gear.

The last thing you want is your fishing decor to smell fishy. Be sure to clean everything very carefully and thoroughly. I use alcohol for lures, bobbers and such. Good detergent and bleach for nets. Vinegar and lemon juice work well too.

What type of decorating can you do with your accumulated treasures? This is where the fun really begins, let your imagination shine. Here are just a few ideas to get you started. Minnow buckets make good catch all containers for bedrooms, kids rooms and bathrooms for items like crayons, hair do-dads, brushes and combs etc. If you are really crafty they can be turned into lamps. Buy lamp fixtures at the hardware store or inexpensive narrow based lamps that fit into the top opening of the minnow bucket.

Make your own fishing swag from long pliable twigs, boat line or saining nets. Make sure you either remove the hooks from lures and replace with twisted wire shaped like hooks or snip the points off with heavy wire cutters. I have put chunks of cork on the ends of each point, these look like baited hooks! From the twigs I randomly tie bobbers and lures with mono filament (fishing line). I like to use cafe curtains with curtain clips on these swags because they hang below the bobbers and lures. Curtains with the long tabs work great as well.

Old fishing poles from yard sales are very cheap and make great curtain rods. I especially like the cane poles because they are easy to cut to size.

Another idea is to hot glue bobbers and lures all over an old lamp base. I think the more the better on this project, totally covering the base. Of course the lamp size and your taste make a difference. If it's a very large lamp or you just don't have enough lures and bobbers you can hot glue solid bands, about 2 inches wide, of hemp rope or twine to fill in larger areas.

A mobile like you see in babies rooms are fun and add an interesting art form to your fishing decor. I prefer to hang the fishing gear at different levels instead of all one length. Again I use twigs or sticks for this project's "cross" to hang the lures, bobbers etc. from and fishing line to tie it all together.

Old wooden picture frames with the glass removed make inexpensive picture boxes. Line a piece of thin cardboard with brown, tan or dark green felt. You can also use fishing print fabric. Put this covered cardboard in the frame like you would a picture and hot glue your treasures on the felt. A good trick is to use sets of three. Three lures, one under the other in a corner, three bobbers side by side for a top row, three hand reels in a row at the bottom for weight and one old metal stringer above the reels.

Things I haven't tried yet but are on my list to create include fishing lures with the hooks removed as cabinet handles, bobbers or lures for light pulls, fishing net swag around the bathroom mirror and drift wood with fishing gear as a conversation piece.

Creating your own fishing decor is fun, inexpensive and most of all you have unique decorating items for your home or cabin. Start collecting old fishing gear and let your imagination go.

Often lake fish will gather in schools and cruise around looking forfood, but often it is the small fish that rise to take surface insectswhile the bigger ones feed in deeper water.

Where the fish are.

Fish in lakes aren't much different than fish in rivers. Their concerns are still protection from predators and finding food. Lake fly fishing techniques involved finding the areas where both these concerns are met.

Remember that lake water is generally deeper than rivers water, so bottom structures may not be visible. Try fishing where a stream enters the lake. Insects are often carried into the lake here and the fish will be waiting for them.

Structure in lakes includes piers and boat ramps, weeded areas and deadfalls. Fish are likely to be hanging around man-made structures that have been sunken into the waters. Lake fish like to hang around drop off areas. Here they can munch on food that has fallen into thewater and dart back into the depths when spooked. Warm water fish gather around natural springs and weeds also.

Dry flies and lake fishing

Lake fly fishing techniques usually involved fishing deep. It takesenergy for a fish to take insects from the surface and there has tobe a darned good reason for a bigger fish to do so. A big hatch might entice a large fish from the depths to feed, but you are morelikely to catch smaller fish when using dry flies on lakes.

Wet flies and lake fishing

If a fish expends more energy than he receives in searching for food,he will not survive long. Lake fishing techniques include knowinghow an aggressively feeding fish will behave. He will check out the feeding zones, feed, then return to safe water to rest untilit is feeding time again. If you are looking for large lake fish,you need to get your hook down where they are holding.

The larger the fish, the more energy it takes for him to feed, therefore the offering needs to be worthwhile. A big juicy-looking streamer hanging right in front of his nose will often tempt a fish.

The advantage of fishing wets over dries in lakes is that you canvary the depth and the retrieve until you find the combination that the fish cannot resist. Keep a close eye on your line becauseoften the take is subtle. Using a strike indicator is helpful here.

Often a sinking line or sink tip can give you a big advantage whenfly fishing a lake. You have a much greater chance for success if you can get your fly to the fish.

Over tens of thousands of years, the salmon's life-cycle has become the foundation of the North Pacific ecosystem, as the nutrients from salmon carcasses have enriched what would otherwise be a mineral-poor, unproductive environment.

It's no secret that the Northwest's freshwater fish, including cutthroat and rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, bull trout, and whitefish, all rely on the stages of the salmon's life cycle for much of their diet. Fishing for Bass in BC: South Okanagan - It's All About Size

Fishing for bass in BC is synonymous with the South Okanagan. A string of warm water lakes connected by the Okanagan River provides a quality fishery for both small and largemouth bass with fish taken in the 8lb + range on an annual basis.

The sunny Okanagan is the interior playground for British Columbia. The valley is literally lined with recreational lakes from Vernon to Osoyoos. It's just been recently that the BC Fish and Wildlife have started paying closer attention to the bass fishery in the valley. Believe me, it has paid dividends. If there is a record largemouth to be caught in BC, it's likely to come from this valley.

Skaha Lake

Skaha Lake is a fairly large lake on the south side of Penticton, mostly known for it's recreational activities like boating, beaches and other watersports. Don't let that fool you. This lake has big fish and the bass fishing is just getting better. Skaha Lake can be accessed from a number of areas, depending where you want to fish. The most popular area for fishing seems to be at the south end near the outlet of the lake. I've seen smallies as large as 5 lb taken fishing from the banks with bobber and worm. Other areas of the lake worth a try include the weed beds that stretch almost the entire length of the lake on the east side. There are a couple of accesses on Eastside Road as well as on the west side of the lake at Kaleden. Skaha Lake can also be trolled for large rainbows and kokanee to 11 lbs. Accommodation and services are available in Penticton, Kaleden and Okanagan Falls.

Vaseux Lake

If there is a record to be had it should be had at Vaseux. Vaseux Lake is situated along Hwy 97, between Okanagan Falls and Oliver. The lake is bordered by Vaseux Lake Provincial Park, Vaseux Bighorn Wildlife Area and Vaseux Bird Sanctuary. Arguably the best bass lake in BC, Vaseux has been producing 9 lb+ bass for over 20 years (that I know of). If you stop at the Provincial Fish and Wildlife offices in Penticton you could ask to see the 9 lb largemouth bass mounted on their wall (they give good information too). Different from Duck Lake (Kootenays-Creston) in structure, the bass here are more likely to respond to underwater minnow type lures or flies. Don't discount the other baits and techniques because like any lake, it can be finicky. Fish near the weed beds at the north end and west side of the lake all the way down to the island. Large rainbow trout, kokanee and perch are also residents of Vaseux. Spring and fall are best. NO POWER BOATS including electric motors of any kind are allowed on the lake so be prepared to row or paddle your way around. The lake is accessible from the provincial park or through the resort at the south end of the lake. If you are tired of fishing, take advantage of hiking and wildlife viewing areas that surround the lake. Fantastic bird watching and California Bighorn Sheep are nearby. One word of caution. There is a healthy rattlesnake population along the dam at the Ducks Unlimited project, located at the north end or the lake and along the old Kettle Valley railway bed on the west side of the lake. If you want to hike around, wear proper clothing and use a hiking pole, it could come in handy. Accommodations and services can be had at the provincial park, the resort, or any of the nearby towns of Okanagan Falls, Penticton or Oliver.

Osoyoos Lake

Located in the most Southern Okanagan, Osoyoos Lake is a large warm lake (reputed to be the warmest freshwater lake in Canada) that stretches across the Canada - US border. Mostly a recreational lake with growing residential and agricultural development, Osoyoos Lake rivals Vaseux for large bass and is reported to hold the provincial record. Fishing is best in the spring but can be productive throughout the year for largemouth, smallmouth, black crappie and perch. The Osoyoos Oxbows that border the north end of the lake where the river runs in can also be very productive for large bass.

Osoyoos offers all services and with its warm desert climate (yes, it does get winter... sometimes snow), it is fast becoming a retirement haven. The Osoyoos area is home to a unique diversity of plants, birds and animals. Oliver - Osoyoos is also the wine capital of BC, producing award winning wines. If the fishing is slow, you can always take a wine tour. While in the Okanagan Area, take advantage of the other recreational opportunities available or simply just take the time to enjoy the spectacular scenic drives. The Okanagan is famous for it's vineyards, fruit growing orchards, beaches, watersports, hiking, biking, golfing and much, much more. With it's generally moderate climate and stimulating scenery, the Okanagan is one of the most desireable places to live or visit in all of BC and Canada. Kelowna is equipped with an international airport that is serviced by major Canadian airlines and their subsiduaries.

Bass Fishing - Learn the facts that can help you catch the trophies

In the fishing world largemouth bass and smallmouth bass are two of the more highly coveted fish individuals love to catch. Those who express an interest in fishing for bass tend to know all there is to know not only about catching this underwater marvel but their individual habitat as well.

For those who may not be quite as versed with regard to bass fishing or even those fishermen who would like to brush up on their bass knowledge, the following paragraphs will highlight some interesting information regarding largemouth bass and smallmouth bass as well as fishing for these species.

Largemouth bass and smallmouth bass spend most of their time in lakes and rivers where fresh water is plentiful. They tend to congregate in mossy, sheltered areas where smaller fish, such as minnows, provide a meal for them to snack on at their leisure. The size of the bass tends to vary depending on the fish itself although estimations can be given as to their size. Smallmouth bass can be approximately 8-15 inches long and weigh around 4 lbs. or so. As for largemouth bass, these fish tend to be around 1-2 lbs. and have a length similar to the average of the smallmouth bass.

There are certain tricks of the fishing trade which help bass fishermen catch the most bass possible. The best time to fish for bass is May through July as it will yield the best possible catches for bass fishermen. As for favored bait, items such as minnows, crayfish, nightcrawlers, jigs, crankbaits and spinnerbaits all attract both types of bass. Both live bait and artificial lures will attract the largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. It is important to note that one may be better able to catch smallmouth bass as opposed to largemouth bass as the smallmouth bass have a more unique curiosity when it comes to their attraction to bait and lures.

With regard to the best time of day to catch bass, it is best to head out to the lake or river throughout the summertime around early morning or late evening into nighttime, as the bass tend to take shelter from the sun during the day. They are more active when the climate is cooler and the sun is not as bright.

Bass fishing, whether for largemouth or smallmouth bass, is an exciting pastime which yields many fortuitous results. By following the aforementioned tips, one may be that much luckier when it comes to reeling in the best catch.

Fishing Tid Bits How To Fish Part 4

Well I am back with my fourth article and it is exciting to see how many people are interested in the fun of fishing. These articles are meant for everyone. Some of the more experienced anglers probably know a lot about what I am talking about already but I think back to when I knew nothing about fishing. I wish there would have been something like that. Eventually this will be an eBook so take advantage of it while you can. I have decided to change it up a bit and submit random tips. I hope you enjoy

1. A Sure Fire Way To Find Fish

Birds are a great way to find the good fishing spots. In the winter time on the ice you will find the sea gulls and crows gathering at spots where other fishermen have left bait or some of the small fish they caught. During the summer on open water you?re going to want to watch for loons and other fish eating ducks. They are most likely diving for minnows but find the minnows and eventually the bigger fish will be there to feed.

2. Yes Fussy Crappies Can Be Caught

In the spring time you can usually find the crappies in shallow water under bushes or protected by bank cover. At this point they are preparing to spawn. At this time of the year there not too interested in feeding and especially do shy away from baits and lures. You can however coax in some of the bigger ones by presenting them bait that is as natural as possible. Cast a small minnow with no sinker. By doing this the actions of the minnow will be just natural enough to get those off season crappies biting.

3. A Worm And Bobber

When you?re using a worm below your bobber you don?t want to hook it in the head because you are going to miss your strikes. And the worst thing is those darn fish will steal your bait. You want to hook the worm twice in the middle of the body. This way the bait looks more natural and when a fish bites it is more likely to suck in the worm.

4. Walleye And Busy Lakes

So many of our lakes have become so commercialized with weekend warriors. They are populated with jet boats, jet skis, and all sorts of commotion but don?t worry the big walleye can still be caught. I would suggest getting to the lake when it?s still dark. The walleye will be hungry. You?re only going to get a few hours of frenzied fishing but it will be worth it because once the boaters get out there the walleye will make a quick dash to deeper water and their feeding will be done for the day.

5. Careful When You Are Tube Fishing

You have to always be aware of your surroundings when you fishing in a float tube. The wind can make things miserable for you. Obviously you are using your hands for fishing so your feet are going to have to do the work. I would suggest tube fishing on smaller dug outs and ponds. If it gets too windy get out because once it takes over it could be a long tiring way back for you.
